Final Blog for Art

Over this term I really sharpened my drawing, painting, and observation skills. All our projects helped me understand the concepts of position, depth, shadow, and contrast. Before I was a pretty good drawer but had difficulty positioning my ideas on paper, and adding realistic parts, like shadow and depth.
I also discovered I was a painter as well as a drawer. Going into the term my focus was to sharpen my drawing skills. As we got into the course and the projects I realized I enjoyed painting and wanted to focus on that too. This course opened my eyes to the possibilities of painting beyond the basic flower drawing.

This is the observation drawing of candy. I added detail to the gum drops by dotting the candy with white dots. This brought out the texture of the piece. I unfortunately was not able to finish this piece. My intentions for this project was to capture the texture of candy. I feel that the eye often interprets the texture of an object to its taste and appeal. The observer can feel the texture of the 4 candies in the front, and understand the meaning of the piece.

This I modeled after a village I go skiing in, Mont Tremblant. I tried to mimic the cartoon style houses and the colors used there.

For this piece my influence came from a newspaper headline I was given. It included gambling and the death of an old man. To combine the two I wanted to create a morbid theme with a touch of realism. To impose this mood upon the piece I used the symbolism of death, cloaked firue, and the realisitic setting of a poker table. The black background created depth of space.

Question: what inspired you to add so much detail to your pieces? what was the message you wanted to portray through detail?

Alexander's pieces are amazing! the amount of detail in his drawings and the precision of his paper cut outs is incredible; my mind cannot even grasp how he was able to cut the paper out! Another piece of his art which i found interesting was the figures he draws. While some (the rat) are real animals other images he portrays are what appear to be figures though morphed by nature or fantasy into other things. Like the piece of a man, on either side of his head trees sprout and other flowers and plants make up his body. His unique approach to art and the ways he expresses them interest me and I look forward to seeing his show
